Phase-by-Phase Strategy

Phase 1

Sibling Priority

Guaranteed

If you already have a child in NYPS, your younger child gets guaranteed admission through Phase 1. This is the most secure path.

Phase 2A

Alumni Route

High

NYPS has a strong alumni association. If you or your spouse is a former student, you can register under Phase 2A. Alumni membership should be secured well before the registration year. Note: Since 2022, 2A(1) and 2A(2) have been merged into a single Phase 2A.

Phase 2B

Parent Volunteer (PV) Route

Medium

NYPS accepts parent volunteers but the program is highly competitive with limited slots. Applications typically open 2 years before your child's registration year. Minimum 40 hours of volunteer service required. Grassroots leader endorsement through the local RC/CC is an alternative path.

Phase 2C

Open Balloting

Very Low

NYPS has balloted for <1km in Phase 2C in most recent years. Applicants outside 1km have almost no chance. To be competitive, you must live within 1km of the school.

Phase 2B — Step-by-Step Guide

Phase 2B at Nanyang Primary is extremely competitive. There are TWO main paths: Parent Volunteer (PV) and Grassroots Leader. NYPS has one of Singapore's most demanding PV programs — 80 hours minimum (double the standard 40).

Parent Volunteer (PV)Very high competition

  1. Contact NYPS parent support group 2.5 years before your child's P1 registration year
  2. Submit PV application in January-February. Slots fill within days of opening
  3. Complete minimum 80 volunteer hours over 2 years (40 hours/year)
  4. Receive Phase 2B eligibility certificate from school in June of registration year

Timeline: Start: K1 year (Jan). PV application: Jan-Feb of K1 year. Complete hours by: Apr of P1 registration year. Confirmation: Jun of P1 year

Grassroots LeaderHigh competition

  1. Join your local Residents' Committee (RC) or Neighbourhood Committee (NC) near the school 2+ years before P1 year
  2. Serve actively as an executive member (not just ordinary member). Attend monthly meetings
  3. Obtain endorsement letter from People's Association (PA) for Phase 2B
  4. Note: Endorsement window closes approximately 12 months before P1 registration

Timeline: Start: By K1 year. Executive membership: Must be confirmed at least 1 year before registration. Endorsement cutoff: ~Jun of year before registration

Why <1km Matters

NYPS has balloted for <1km in Phase 2C every year since 2019. Living within 1km is the only realistic path for non-alumni, non-PV families. Address registration must be completed before Phase 2C registration (typically by end-July).
